Alexandra Eala makes history with first WTA singles title

Alexandra Eala became the first woman from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour-level singles title on Monday after defeating top-seeded Jessica Pegula at the Washington Open. Eala won the rain-interrupted final 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, rallying to win the final eight games of the match. During her run to the championship, the 21-year-old defeated several high-profile opponents, including Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, Leylah Fernandez, Elina Svitolina, and Naomi Osaka.

Following the victory, Eala received widespread recognition in her home country. Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos hosted a reception in her honor at Malacanang Palace and congratulated her on social media. Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao also praised her on social media, calling her the new champion and citing her Filipino heart. Tournament director Mark Ein noted that interest in Eala was unmatched, stating that at least 80 percent of ticket requests for the tournament concerned her matches.

Eala, who attended the Rafa Nadal Academy on a scholarship at age 13, has become a catalyst for the growth of tennis in the Philippines. She noted that tennis courts in Manila are now harder to book than when she was younger. Pegula also commented on the significant Filipino support in the stands, stating that the fans are helping to grow the sport globally.

In the men's final on Monday, third-seeded Taylor Fritz defeated Rafael Jodar 7-6 (8/2), 6-4 to claim the 11th title of his career. Eala is scheduled to compete in the Canadian Open in Toronto before the US Open begins on August 23.
