  • A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.

Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.

Every source for this story reports from Brazil.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro announced Deputy Alfredo Gaspar as his running mate for the presidency during a press conference at the PL headquarters in Brasília. Valdemar Costa Neto, president of the PL, stated that Gaspar was chosen by Flávio and campaign coordinator Rogério Marinho six months ago. During the announcement, Gaspar stated he would march to transform Brazil into a just and decent place.

Gaspar is a 55 year old lawyer and former prosecutor from Maceió, Alagoas. He served as a Justice prosecutor for the Public Ministry of Alagoas for over 20 years, where he held the position of Prosecutor General of Justice. He also served as the Secretary of Public Security for Alagoas during two separate periods. In 2022, he was elected as a federal deputy for Alagoas, initially representing União Brasil before joining the PL.

Gaspar recently gained national visibility as the rapporteur of the CPMI of the INSS, a joint parliamentary commission investigating billion dollar frauds in pensions and retirements. In March 2026, he presented a report of over 1,200 pages requesting the indictment of more than 200 individuals for crimes including corruption and money laundering. This role placed him in opposition to the current administration of President Lula.

Reporting on the strategic nature of the choice differs by perspective. A center left source frames the appointment as a strategic move to strengthen the campaign's focus on fighting crime and to build a competitive political platform in the Northeast region. A center source focuses more on the political maneuvering within Congress, noting that Gaspar's appointment as the INSS rapporteur contradicted previous agreements involving the presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

How each side framed it

Centre-left
Framed the appointment as a strategic electoral calculation to expand the campaign's reach in the Northeast and appeal to conservative security concerns.
Centre
Focused on the political process and the specific legislative conflicts surrounding Gaspar's appointment as a rapporteur.
