Assam Flood Death Toll Reaches 82 as Government and Private Relief Efforts Continue

The death toll from floods in Assam has risen to 82, with over 1.92 lakh people affected across five districts according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Saturday that floodwaters are receding and people are beginning to return home, though he noted that restoration and rehabilitation remain the primary challenges.

The state government has launched a time bound recovery roadmap. This plan includes the release of funds for the repair of damaged schools and Anganwadi offices, the waiver of July electricity bills and annual property taxes in affected districts, and the distribution of financial assistance to victims. The Chief Minister also announced that 7.62 crore rupees from the Relief Fund will be used to replace uniforms and books for students. Additionally, the government is coordinating with insurance companies to expedite claims for damaged livestock and vehicles.

Simultaneously, private relief efforts are ongoing in the Sivasagar district. Actor Randeep Hooda joined a relief drive organized by Global Sikhs in the Nimaijan area to distribute rations and essential materials. Hooda highlighted the ongoing suffering of families stranded in deep floodwaters and warned of potential illnesses caused by stagnant water and mud in homes. He also served food through langar at the Sivasagar railway station for families arriving from surrounding areas.
