Assam Flood Death Toll Reaches 87 as Chief Minister Seeks Federal Intervention

At least 87 people have died in devastating floods in Assam. The majority of the fatalities occurred in the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat, areas that typically do not experience major flooding. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on August 4, 2026, that he will discuss the issue of mining in Nagaland with the central government to determine if it contributed to the disaster. While some local officials and residents blame illegal sand, stone, and coal mining and deforestation in Nagaland for removing natural flood resistance, organizations based in Nagaland have rejected these theories. Mr. Sarma stated that a scientific study is needed to determine the actual cause and noted that he will also request the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited to build more cross drainage structures where highways have obstructed water flow. The state government plans to begin assessing house damage on August 9 to accelerate relief and rehabilitation. Additionally, the Chief Minister agreed to increase compensation for victims. Community support has been widespread, with volunteers including Sikhs, daily wagers, barbers, and mechanics providing free labor and services to those affected.
