Authorities Investigate Kalimantan Forest Fires as Blazes Spread

Forest and land fires are spreading across Kalimantan, with hot spots detected in all five Indonesian provinces on the island of Borneo as of Friday, August 21, 2026. National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that authorities are investigating the causes of the fires and have detained several individuals involved in land burning. The Ministry of Forestry added that legal action will be taken against any individuals or businesses found to be in violation of fire prevention regulations, specifically prohibiting the clearing of land using fire.

He further stated that central government austerity measures and resulting budget cuts have reduced the capacity of local administrations to respond, creating a need for more funding and equipment such as water pumps.

Weather modification efforts have brought rain to some areas, but they have struggled to contain the intensifying blazes. The Ministry of Forestry has urged affected communities to limit outdoor activities and wear masks due to the dense smoke.
