Brazil's First Lady Calls for Discord Ban Following Teen Suicide

Brazil's first lady, Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, has called for the immediate blocking of the platform Discord in Brazil. Her request was made on Thursday during a ceremony where President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned a law increasing penalties for digital sexual crimes against children and adolescents. The call for the ban follows an investigation into the death of a 13 year old girl in Mato Grosso do Sul who was allegedly induced by an online group to perform self harm and commit suicide during a live broadcast on the platform. According to the Civil Police, the transmission was watched by more than 200 people.

In response to the incident, the Ministry of Justice conducted Operation Lívia on Tuesday. This operation involved seven judicial warrants, including one arrest of an adult and the apprehension of several minors across five Brazilian states. Authorities state that the group used psychological manipulation and blackmail to control victims. The Secretary of Digital Rights noted that none of the profiles participating in the live stream had their ages verified by Discord, suggesting a failure in the platform's protection mechanisms. The Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, stated that he is seeking information from the Ministry of Justice to support a potential legal action against the company.

President Lula emphasized that freedom of expression has limits and should not be confused with violence or murder.
