Several Brazilian political parties held conventions on Sunday, August 2, to officialize candidates for the 2026 elections. In Minas Gerais, the PSD officialized Mateus Simões for governor and Carlos Viana for re-election to the Senate. Former governor Romeu Zema attended the event and expressed his unconditional support for Simões. The PSD also homologated 42 candidates for state deputy and 38 for federal deputy, though the vice-governor candidate remains undecided pending talks with allies such as Novo and Avante.
Also in Minas Gerais, the PSB confirmed 41 candidates for federal deputy and 53 for state deputy. Political parties have until August 5 to officialize all candidacies. Following this, names must be registered with the Superior Electoral Court by August 15, with the official campaign beginning the next day. Voters will cast ballots on October 4 for president, governor, two senate seats per state, and federal and state deputies.
