Brussels Prosecutor Demands More Resources Amid Surge in Drug Violence

Brussels top prosecutor Julien Moinil has warned that the Belgian capital is facing a dangerous wave of drug related violence and has criticized the lack of resources provided to combat it. Speaking on Friday, Moinil stated that his requests for more help have not been taken seriously. He highlighted a critical shortage of personnel, noting that the judicial police alone lack more than 80 investigators.

The violence has manifested in numerous shootings across various municipalities, including Molenbeek and Saint Gilles. One recent high profile incident involved two hooded men firing an automatic weapon approximately a dozen times at a police station in Anderlecht. Moinil described this specific attack as a direct strike against the state. According to reports, there have been 69 shootings linked to drug trafficking so far this year, with seven occurring in the last week alone.

Moinil argued that the violence will continue unless the leaders of criminal networks, many of whom operate from abroad, are neutralized. He also pointed to issues within the prison system where gang leaders continue to direct operations from their cells, as well as the difficulty of processing attackers who are often minors or in irregular administrative situations. Despite these challenges, Moinil noted that efforts have led to the detention and conviction of 93 primary perpetrators or instigators, along with 14 minors.
