Burgas, Bulgaria Selected as Host City for Eurovision Song Contest 2027

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Bulgarian National Television (BNT) have announced that the city of Burgas will host the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. The event is scheduled to take place from May 12 to 15, 2027, at the Arena Burgas, a sports and entertainment venue opened in 2023. The selection follows Bulgaria's first ever victory in the contest, achieved by singer Dara with the song Bangaranga.

Burgas was chosen through a competitive process involving four Bulgarian cities: Burgas, Sofia, Varna, and Plovdiv. While the EBU cited the city's technical potential, infrastructure, and cultural identity as key factors, the decision was unexpected for some. Both the winning singer and the director of BNT had previously expressed expectations that the capital, Sofia, would be the host. To ensure broader national participation, BNT intends for Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna to be part of the complementary program.

In addition to the main contest, the event will feature the Eurovision Village and the EuroClub. The EBU noted that Burgas is one of the smallest cities to host the event, with a population of approximately 200,000. The contest is expected to provide a significant economic boost, similar to previous hosts such as Liverpool, Malmö, and Basel.

Separately, the EBU announced a rule change stating that countries involved in armed conflicts or sensitive geopolitical situations affecting security and stability will be ineligible to host the contest, even if they win. This update follows feedback from broadcasters after the 2026 contest in Vienna. While one source notes this is interpreted as a reaction to Israel's presence in the contest, another source specifies that the measure could potentially affect both Israel and Ukraine.
