Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has launched a mini EV called the "Rakko" to compete in Japan's "kei" car market. The vehicle is a super height wagon featuring electric slide doors and is available in three grades with driving ranges between 210km and 320km per charge. The starting price is 2,145,000 yen including tax, which drops below 2 million yen after a government subsidy of 150,000 yen. Actor Alice Hirose appeared at the launch event to promote the new model.

BYD entered the Japanese passenger car market in 2023 and reported sales of 4,420 units for fiscal year 2025. Outlets with a center lean frame this move as a strategic challenge to major Japanese automakers, such as Toyota, in a domestic market that has historically been difficult for foreign brands to penetrate.
