Canada and United States Enter Trade Conflict After Negotiations Collapse

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has ended trade negotiations with the United States, citing unacceptable conditions imposed by the administration of Donald Trump. In response, the Trump government applied 50 percent tariffs to a small portion of Canadian products. Canada plans to retaliate with tariffs on approximately 700 U.S. products, valued at 20 billion dollars, starting September 8. President Trump has further threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on all Canadian car and truck imports beginning January 1.

Public support for the Prime Minister's decision is high within Canada, with polls showing approval ratings between 70 percent and 76 percent. However, the economic risks are significant because the United States is Canada's primary trading partner and receives 70 percent of its exports. Canada's economy is currently growing at around 1 percent with unemployment near 7 percent.
