Canada and the United States have entered a trade war following the collapse of trade negotiations in Washington on Friday. The United States has imposed new 50 percent tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, including goods such as cement and hockey equipment. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Saturday that Canada will retaliate with "dollar for dollar" tariffs starting September 8, targeting sectors including steel, dairy, electronics, and agricultural machinery.

Democratic lawmakers and governors from border states, such as New York Governor Kathy Hochul, criticized President Donald Trump for raising costs for American families. The Business Roundtable, representing 200 major US corporations, also urged both governments to return to the table to avoid rising costs. Within Canada, Carney received support from various provincial leaders, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who stated that President Trump cannot be trusted.
The economic stakes are significant as Canada sends roughly 70 percent of its exports to the United States. While some reports note that the new US tariffs apply to goods normally protected by the USMCA, others highlight that the dispute further complicates the future of the North American free trade agreement, which President Trump has declined to renew in its current form.
