Canada and United States Escalate Trade War Through New Tariffs

Canada and the United States have entered a new phase of economic conflict following the return of Donald Trump to the White House. Prime Minister Mark Carney has imposed retaliatory import taxes on various United States goods after President Trump threatened to increase tariffs. In the automotive sector, Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian vehicles from 25 percent to 50 percent starting January 1, 2027. While Carney has not matched that specific 50 percent threat, a 25 percent tax on certain American vehicles has been in place since last year. Canada has matched United States rates of 50 percent on steel and aluminium, and Carney has added import taxes on United States wood products, including plywood and screws. The National Association of Home Builders has urged the United States to exempt building materials due to a housing affordability crisis. Additionally, Canada has targeted household items such as washing machines, furniture, and cutlery. Some economists argue that Carney chose these specific goods because Canadians can easily switch to domestic suppliers to minimize the impact on households.
