Canada and United States Near Trade Agreement to Avert Tariffs

Canada and the United States are close to finalizing a trade agreement that could prevent the imposition of new tariffs on approximately US$20 billion in Canadian products. Dominic LeBlanc, the Canadian minister responsible for trade with the US, stated on Thursday that the two nations are very close to a deal following meetings in Washington with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. President Donald Trump has postponed the threatened 50 percent tariffs until 12:01 am EDT on Saturday to allow for the conclusion of these negotiations.

Proposed terms of the agreement may include reducing the maximum tariff on Canadian vehicles from 25 percent to 15 percent and cutting tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum in half to 25 percent. While some provincial leaders have backed this direction, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has criticized the process. Kinew called President Trump erratic and irresponsible, stating that he is not to be trusted. Despite these remarks, Kinew indicated that Manitoba may follow the federal request as part of a Team Canada approach, though he encouraged consumers to continue buying Canadian products.
