Chile Manages Dual Weather Emergencies with Evacuations in South and Recovery Efforts in North

Chile is currently managing two separate weather emergencies: a current frontal system causing evacuations in the south and ongoing recovery efforts following devastating rains in the north. In the center-south zone, from Valparaíso to Los Ríos, Minister of the Interior Claudio Alvarado reported 138 people affected and over 900 houses damaged. The situation is most critical in the commune of La Unión, which remains under red alert due to the overflow of the Llollelhue river; authorities have issued SAE alerts requesting the evacuation of Rapaco El Molino, Ex Población Osvaldo Leal, and Población Foitzick.

Simultaneously, President José Antonio Kast has arrived in Copiapó following a trip to Peru to lead a technical emergency table for the Atacama and Coquimbo regions. The President is evaluating rescue operations and supply efforts for isolated areas and is scheduled to travel to Coquimbo on Wednesday to provide economic support announcements. While one regional report cites 501 affected persons and two deaths, Senapred reports higher overall figures for the event, including 16,998 affected people, 13,000 isolated individuals, and 13 deaths.

Regarding infrastructure, Route 5 remains closed in parts of Coquimbo with expected normalization by Friday. National electricity supply is currently at 98%. Potable water has been fully restored in Ovalle and Andacollo, while the Coquimbo-La Serena area stands at 98% restoration. In Atacama, Freirina has nearly 100% water access, though Huasco continues to see a gradual recovery with water that is not yet potable. Classes remain suspended in Huasco until Wednesday.
