A study published in the journal Journal on Thursday indicates that the expansion of solar energy in China has led to a reduction in bird diversity. Researchers from the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology analyzed data from 2,344 Chinese counties between 2014 and 2023, crossing government solar expansion policies with climate data, socioeconomic conditions, land cover, and citizen bird observations. The results showed a moderate negative relationship where stricter solar expansion policies were associated with lower biodiversity for both native and migratory birds. However, native species in mountainous habitats unsuitable for solar parks remained unaffected.
The study describes this situation as a green dilemma, highlighting the tension between reducing carbon emissions and conserving biodiversity. China aims to reach carbon neutrality before 2060, with solar energy projected to make up 45 percent of its energy matrix by that date. Currently, the placement of solar parks is based on government five year plans intended to promote regional economic development. The researchers noted that these biodiversity issues also apply to other renewable sources, such as wind farms.
Lead author Huiming Zhang stated that the goal is not to stop the transition to renewable energy but to ensure development is better guided by ecological information. The research team recommends directing large solar projects to areas with fewer ecological conflicts and limiting land conversion in productive regions rich in habitats.
