The consular affairs department of China's foreign ministry issued the warning on Tuesday, citing safety concerns including rampant cyber fraud and online gambling criminal activities. The ministry further warned that those who choose to travel to or remain in the country face extremely high security risks and may experience delays in receiving consular assistance.

China claims Taiwan is part of its territory and has persuaded other nations to break diplomatic ties with the self ruled island. On May 1, China extended a zero tariff policy to all African countries except Eswatini. In May, Taiwan's president Lai Ching te visited Eswatini, a trip that Taipei accused Beijing of trying to derail by pressuring nearby countries to revoke overflight permits.
