A Chinese man in his 30s, surnamed Jeong, has admitted to murdering a 25 year old Chinese graduate student and scattering her remains across multiple regions of South Korea. The victim was found dead at the suspect's residence in Gyeongsan on Tuesday after being missing for five days. According to police, Jeong admitted to killing the woman and discarding parts of her mutilated body in Gyeongsan and in northwestern Gyeonggi Province, which is approximately 240 kilometers away. Investigators have been dispatched to the sites identified by the suspect to recover the remains.
Jeong, who worked as an outside lecturer at a graduate school attended by the victim, reportedly strangled the woman in the early hours of August 20. Police believe the suspect attempted to deceive investigators by wearing the victim's clothing and carrying her suitcase and cellphone to Dongdaegu Station to make it appear as though she had left home alive. He allegedly called the police himself the following day to report her missing, pretending to be her boyfriend. Police are investigating him for obstruction of official duties by deception in addition to the murder charges.
The victim had entered Korea on August 14 to obtain documents related to her degree. Jeong appeared at the Daegu District Court on Thursday for a formal arrest warrant hearing. Due to the brutal nature of the crime, police are considering a psychopathy evaluation for the suspect.
