Chipotle Mexican Grill has removed jalapenos from its restaurants in Minnesota and other locations that received the product. The company took this action after identifying the peppers as a potential common ingredient in a salmonella outbreak currently under investigation by public health authorities. Chipotle stated that it proactively replaced the jalapenos with product from different growers out of an abundance of caution.
The Minnesota Department of Health reported 110 salmonella cases in the state. Of the 84 people interviewed, 75 reported eating at Chipotle between June 14 and July 14. Health officials noted that evidence suggests the contaminated item was also served at other Mexican style restaurants. The US Food and Drug Administration is leading a traceback investigation to identify the definitive source. Minnesota health officials stated that Chipotle has cooperated fully by providing records and removing suspected ingredients.
Following the news, Chipotle shares fell as much as 8.5 percent to 35.20 US dollars. The company has a history of foodborne illness outbreaks dating back to 2015, including E. coli and norovirus. This current probe occurs alongside a separate multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting Taco Bell, which has impacted general consumer confidence in eating out.
