Cockroach Janta Party Plans September 5 March Amid Police Surveillance and Allegations of Brutality

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth led pressure group, has announced a peaceful protest march in New Delhi on September 5. The planned route runs from India Gate to the Delhi Police headquarters on Jai Singh Road. The CJP is calling for the demonstration to protest the government's alleged failure to fulfill promises made on July 25, specifically regarding the withdrawal of first information reports registered against protesters. The group also intends to focus on government schools, as September 5 is Teachers' Day in India.

Delhi Police officials state that the CJP has not yet sought official permission for the march. Police have noted that India Gate is not a designated protest site and that prohibitory orders are currently in force in the New Delhi district. Authorities are monitoring the social media activity of CJP leaders and assessing the potential for protesters to travel from other states. Security preparations include the possible deployment of the Central Reserve Police Force and the Indo Tibetan Border Police.

Controversy persists over the conduct of security forces during previous demonstrations. CJP national convenor Abhijeet Dipke has highlighted cases of alleged pellet gun injuries sustained during a July 20 parliament march. While a center left source reports that India's Supreme Court has ordered an inquiry into police conduct, Union minister Kiren Rijiju has rejected allegations of brutality and stated that police handled the situation peacefully. A BJP secretary has characterized the student protests as being influenced by foreign forces spreading poison.

The movement was sparked by a remark using the term cockroach made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. According to Abhijeet Dipke, the remark was aimed at CJP co convenor Saurav Das.
