Construction workers in the east Flemish town of Dendermonde discovered a stash of gold bars and coins estimated to be worth 9 million euros, or approximately 10.4 to 10.5 million US dollars, during renovation work last Tuesday. The gold was found bricked into cellar walls while the crew was performing groundwork for a sewerage system. One source reports that a drill bit became stuck upon hitting a gold bar during drilling operations.
The discovery occurred at a building belonging to a local charity, CAW East-Flanders. Following the find, the gold was inventoried under camera surveillance and secured in a high-security federal government vault. The Dendermonde police department shared images of the haul, including about 50 gold bars and piles of coins, on their Facebook page.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the legal owner of the trove and how the gold came to be hidden there. Authorities have also cautioned the public to stay away from the fenced-off construction site, noting that some treasure hunters have attempted to visit the location.
