A jury in São Paulo has sentenced businessman Leonardo Souza Ceschini to 13 years and 24 days in prison for the feminicide of his wife, Érica Fernandes Alves Ceschini. The crime occurred on January 31, 2021, in the couple's apartment in the north zone of the capital. The court recognized the crime as a feminicide committed with cruel means, and the sentence was increased because the murder took place in the presence of the couple's children.
The killing followed a dispute over football. Leonardo is a supporter of Corinthians, while Érica supported Palmeiras. The argument took place the day after Palmeiras won the Copa Libertadores final against Santos. According to forensic reports, Érica was killed with eight knife wounds to her chest, back, and leg.
Police were called to the scene around 1 a.m. on the day of the crime. Upon arrival, officers found Érica unconscious in the kitchen and Leonardo with an abdominal wound. Leonardo initially told police that Érica had attacked him and then committed suicide. He later changed his version, stating that he had disarmed her and stabbed her in self defense, admitting he exceeded the necessary force.
Leonardo was arrested in flagrante but was released in February 2021 due to a judicial decision regarding a delay in the filing of the charges. He remained free throughout the legal process until the verdict on Monday. The victim's children are currently under the guardianship of their maternal grandmother.
