Court Orders Arrest of Police Officer Defendant in Medical Student's Death

A São Paulo court has ordered the preventive arrest of military police officer Bruno Carvalho do Prado, one of the defendants in the death of medical student Marco Aurélio Cardenas Acosta. Judge Luiza Torggler Silva issued the order on Friday, citing a risk to public order and the social dangerousness of the officer. The decision follows reports that Prado was involved in a domestic violence incident involving threats and bodily injury against his wife, which is currently under investigation in the 1st Domestic Violence Court of Santo Amaro.

Marco Aurélio Cardenas Acosta was killed by a point blank shot to the abdomen during a police encounter in the Vila Mariana neighborhood in late 2024. The incident began when the student allegedly slapped the rearview mirror of a police vehicle. Officers Bruno Carvalho do Prado and Guilherme Augusto Macedo pursued the student into a hotel, where the shooting occurred. Both officers are facing charges of homicide and are awaiting a jury trial. Reports indicate the victim was taken to Hospital Ipiranga, which was overcrowded and lacked a working CT scanner at the time.

Defense attorney João Carlos Campanini argued that the arrest is an attempt at revenge by the prosecution and stated that the officer's personal life should be separate from the incident that occurred during police service. He announced plans to file for habeas corpus to restore Prado's liberty and questioned how lawyers accessed the domestic violence proceedings, which are typically under seal.
