A violent forest fire in the tourist region of Omis on the Adriatic coast of Croatia has left at least one person dead and dozens injured. Authorities report that between 36 and 40 people were injured, with approximately seven to ten individuals in serious condition. The fire began in the village of Lokva Rogoznica and spread rapidly due to strong winds, destroying homes, cafes, restaurants, and vehicles. The fire chief, Slavko Tucakovic, described the event as one of the worst in the history of Croatia, noting that between 900 and 1,000 hectares were ravaged. Between 1,000 and 2,000 residents and tourists were evacuated to emergency shelters in Omis and Split. Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic visited the site, stating that the fire spread with lightning speed. While the situation stabilized on Friday morning, firefighting efforts continued as other fires were reported in the region. Some tourists reported fleeing with only essential items, leaving behind clothing, identification, and medication.
