A devastating glacial collapse and subsequent flash floods in the Himalayas have left at least 750 to 804 people dead across Nepal and Tibet, with more than 3,000 people still missing. The disaster occurred on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, when a mass of rock and ice broke off a mountain, potentially Lirung Peak, triggering a debris flow that traveled dozens of kilometers downstream. Recovery efforts face severe challenges due to persistent rain, fog, and the formation of new barrier lakes created by landslide debris, which pose a risk of further flooding. Some authorities have already begun burying recovered bodies due to rapid decomposition.
