The death toll from a shooting attack at a school and a private home near Bangkok has risen to nine people following the death of a 12 year old girl on Saturday. The attack occurred on Friday at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province. A 14 year old student opened fire at the school, killing five staff members, including a deputy director and a secretary, before taking his own life. Authorities stated that the shooter also killed his two grandparents at their home earlier that morning. The shooter lived with his grandparents since his parents separated.

Police reported that the suspect used a 9mm semi automatic pistol legally registered to his grandfather. Investigators found that the shooter fired at least 26 rounds at the school and still possessed approximately 30 to 34 rounds of ammunition when he died. Between 14 and 30 people were injured in the attack, with several remaining in critical condition. The school has suspended classes from August 10 to August 14.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the attack appeared planned and suggested the shooter may have been under stress related to his studies. The shooter's father told reporters he was unaware of any motive and noted his son had good school performance. In response to the tragedy, the Prime Minister pledged to introduce new firearms control laws to restrict the public carrying of firearms.

Reports from the scene described chaos as students barricaded themselves in classrooms with desks and chairs. Some students reported initially thinking the gunshots were fireworks or birds being shot. Forensic officials noted that many victims suffered single fatal wounds to vital areas such as the head or chest.

Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Asia. Some reports highlight that the country has an estimated 10 million firearms in civilian possession. This incident is described as one of the deadliest school attacks in the country since 2022.
