A massive flash flood and debris flow along the border of Nepal and China has left at least 623 people dead and more than 2,400 missing. Nepali police reported 616 deaths, while Chinese state media confirmed seven deaths in Tibet. The disaster was triggered on Wednesday by what experts describe as a glacier collapse and rockfall in the Himalayas. The resulting torrent of water, mud, and boulders moved at speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour, destroying infrastructure, bridges, and the Gyirong border crossing. In Nepal, the Nuwakot district was among the hardest hit, with entire villages submerged in mud. Rescue operations have been hampered by thick layers of debris, heavy monsoon rains, and the remote terrain. The Nepal Army has deployed 14 helicopters and thousands of personnel to rescue survivors, including those trapped in hydropower plant tunnels. While the Nepal government initially stated it could handle the rescue independently, it later requested international technical assistance for specialized tasks such as tunnel rescues, body identification, and DNA testing. India has provided humanitarian aid and a specialized medical and tunnel rescue team. International casualties include several French and German nationals, as well as nearly 100 Indian tourists who remain missing. Chinese authorities warned that a new lake formed by the debris had begun to overflow, which temporarily forced the suspension of some rescue efforts. Scientists are currently debating the cause of the event; some suggest a glacial lake outburst flood, while others point to a simultaneous landslide and glacial collapse. Some experts have linked the event to global warming, though others argue it is too early to determine the exact role of climate change.
