Democratic Republic of the Congo Confirms Over 6,000 Ebola Cases

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has confirmed 6,041 cases of Ebola, marking the largest outbreak in the history of the country. According to data from the Ministry of Communication, 2,911 people have died and 1,366 have recovered. Currently, 619 patients remain in isolation or treatment. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments.

The epidemic has affected six provinces and 60 health zones. It was first detected in the province of Ituri and has since spread to other areas, including North Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo. While the World Health Organization announced the outbreak in mid May, some experts believe cases may have gone undetected since February.

Health authorities have begun vaccinating frontline health workers in the city of Kisangani using Ervebo. Although Ervebo is licensed for the Zaire strain of Ebola, animal studies suggest it may offer some protection against the Bundibugyo strain. Authorities are using 20,000 doses in a clinical trial to evaluate its efficacy in humans. Other vaccine candidates are being developed by the University of Oxford and the International Vaccine Institute. Additionally, clinical testing for two antiviral therapies has been underway since early July.
