Denmark Launches Extended Military Conscription Amid Rising Security Concerns

Denmark has begun a new extended military conscription program, with approximately 1,600 recruits starting their service on August 3. The standard service period has been increased from four months to 11 months. This new intake includes women for the first time, though the government continues to draft only a portion of each age group. Among the new recruits is Princess Isabella, the 19 year old daughter of the Danish royal couple, who joined the Guard Hussar Regiment at the Antvorskov Barracks in Slagelse. The royal house indicated that Princess Isabella will waive her compensation during her service.

The expansion of the military program is driven by a tightened security situation in Europe, specifically citing the war in Ukraine and pressures regarding Arctic security. Denmark plans to increase the number of annual conscripts from 5,000 to 7,500 by 2033. For the first time, conscripts will be deployed to Greenland in August, with over 100 soldiers serving for one month to take over tasks from professional troops. This deployment occurs amid tensions involving US President Donald Trump, who has previously suggested annexing the semi autonomous territory.

Recruits undergo five months of basic training followed by six months of operational service. The program also introduces new specialized tracks, such as a drone platoon. While the system uses a ballot for all healthy 18 year olds, it has historically relied mostly on volunteers. Similar conscription models are used by Nordic neighbors Sweden, Finland, and Norway, as well as the Baltic states.
