Diplomatic Crisis Erupts as US Revokes Brazilian Ambassador's Visa

The United States government has revoked the visa of Maria Luiza Viotti, the Brazilian ambassador to Washington, sparking a severe diplomatic crisis between the two nations. The US Department of State justified the move as a reciprocal response to Brazil's delay in granting the agrément, or formal diplomatic approval, for Daniel Perez, the Trump administration's nominee for US ambassador to Brazil. Additionally, the US cited Brazil's recent decision to deny visas to two State Department officials who intended to visit Brazil to question the integrity of the country's electronic voting system. The Brazilian government has rejected these justifications, calling them false and characterizing the move as an attempt to interfere in Brazil's upcoming elections.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva described the US action as irresponsible and impensada, noting that the US had failed to appoint an ambassador to Brazil for a year and a half before nominating Perez in June. While the US has conditioned the restoration of Viotti's visa on the granting of the agrément, the Brazilian government intends to keep her in her post.
