An unidentified drone carrying a significant amount of explosives exploded in northeast Bulgaria on Saturday morning. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that the drone entered Bulgarian airspace from the north and detonated in a sunflower field approximately 100 meters from the border with Romania. The explosion occurred about 1,000 meters from a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, which connects Turkey and Ukraine. There were no casualties or damage to infrastructure reported. Both Bulgarian and Romanian authorities noted that the drone was not detected by radar before the explosion, although Romanian border police reportedly heard the drone before the blast. Prime Minister Radev announced that Bulgaria will strengthen surveillance and redeploy anti-drone capabilities to the Romanian border. The Bulgarian Defense Minister, Dimitar Stoyanov, later stated that preliminary analysis of debris suggests the device was likely a Maya decoy drone, a type he claimed is widely used by Ukrainian armed forces. He added that there is currently no evidence to suggest the incident was intentional. The event will be raised at a meeting of the North Atlantic Council early next week. This incident occurs amid a broader trend of drone sightings in Europe. German authorities recently investigated drones spotted over a military base in Mechernich and an explosive-laden drone found at Leipzig Airport. While some politicians have suggested Russian involvement in these regional incidents, the Russian embassy in Berlin has dismissed such claims as fabricated provocations.
