This gap between resource demand and regenerative capacity has persisted for over fifty years, creating an accumulated ecological deficit of more than 20 years.
Resource consumption varies widely by nation. If the global population lived according to the consumption levels of Qatar, Luxembourg, or Singapore, resources would be exhausted in February. In contrast, per capita footprints in countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Ethiopia remain within the Earth's biocapacity. Hungary reached its overshoot date earlier than the global average on June 24.
Factors contributing to this deficit include unsustainable agricultural practices, wasteful production patterns, and an economy based on fossil fuels. Experts suggest that systemic changes are necessary, including a transition to renewable energy and improved urban planning. Cities are identified as critical areas for transformation because they occupy only 3 percent of the Earth's surface while remaining responsible for approximately 75 percent of energy consumption and 70 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels by half could potentially delay the overshoot date by nearly three months.
