An earthquake has struck Japan, resulting in 36 deaths in Kumamoto Prefecture, according to an announcement from the prefecture. More than 9,200 people have been evacuated. The death toll includes two individuals who are currently under investigation for disaster related causes. In the Mutsu region, the United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.5 earthquake that occurred at a depth of 82 kilometers. Local authorities in Kumamoto have warned of extreme heat and urged residents to secure drinking water and take measures against heatstroke. JR Kyushu stated that resuming operations on the Kyushu Shinkansen between Kumamoto and Shin Minamata during August will be difficult.
