Ebola Epidemic Spreads Across Six Provinces in Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing its 17th Ebola outbreak, which has become the deadliest in the country's history. In the three months since the epidemic was declared in May, there have been 5,514 confirmed infections and 2,642 deaths across six provinces, with the eastern Ituri province serving as the center of the outbreak. Authorities are particularly concerned that the virus may spread via the Congo River, a major artery used daily by thousands of passengers and goods, which could potentially carry the virus to the capital city of Kinshasa. Jean Kaseya, the director general of Africa CDC, has warned that Kinshasa may not remain safe if the epidemic continues to develop at its current pace. The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. While 16,000 doses of a vaccine for the Zaire strain have arrived in Kinshasa to be deployed, it is not yet proven if they provide protection against the Bundibugyo strain. Four candidate vaccines for the Bundibugyo strain are currently under investigation. In the absence of a specific vaccine, health officials are emphasizing prevention and care measures to reduce deaths.
