Ebola Outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo Becomes Deadliest on Record

The current Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the deadliest in the country's history. The death toll has reached 2,325, surpassing the 2,299 fatalities recorded during the previous record outbreak from 2018 to 2020. Since the outbreak was declared in May, nearly 5,000 confirmed infections have been reported. UN Under Secretary General Tom Fletcher stated that the epidemic is doubling approximately every 20 days and warned that the virus is outrunning the response.

Health workers are facing significant risks, with the WHO reporting that at least 155 have been infected and 45 have died as of August 9. The crisis is straining a health system already weakened by mass displacement and conflict. In North Kivu Province, dedicated beds for suspected patients were fully occupied by Saturday. Medecins Sans Frontieres noted that other health emergencies, including measles, cholera, and malaria, risk being neglected as resources are diverted to Ebola.

To combat the spread, the UN has deployed 20 additional humanitarian staff and allocated an additional 30.5 million US dollars from the Central Emergency Response Fund. However, challenges remain. Some reports highlight the need to accelerate the launch of experimental vaccines, while others point to a lack of community cooperation driven by suspicions of profiteering and distrust over the handling of response funds.
