Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 4,000 cases, with the latest government data reporting 4,053 infections and 1,850 deaths. The epidemic is the second largest in the world and has been described as the fastest spreading on record. Cases have been recorded across five provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo. Experts believe the virus began circulating in Ituri as early as January, months before the official declaration on May 15. Factors contributing to the spread include delayed detection, overwhelmed surveillance, military conflict, and a lack of vaccines for the specific virus strain involved.

In response to the crisis, the Gavi Alliance and the World Health Organization are prioritizing a phase 3 clinical trial for the Ervebo vaccine to study its effectiveness against the Bundibugyo species of Ebola. Gavi has allocated 40 million dollars from its First Response Fund to accelerate access to vaccines specific to this strain. Meanwhile, health authorities recently intercepted a river boat near Kinshasa after a passenger died in Mongala province. Seven symptomatic passengers tested negative for Ebola, and authorities have expanded screening for all boats arriving in the capital to prevent further spread.

Outlets with a center lean focused on the rapid spread of the virus and the urgent need for vaccine rollouts. Center right outlets emphasized the institutional response and the specific clinical trials being conducted by Gavi and the WHO. Center left outlets highlighted the systemic failures and environmental factors, such as military conflict and delayed detection, that allowed the disease to outrun containment efforts.
