Ebola Outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo Reaches Deadliest Levels

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing the deadliest Ebola outbreak in its history, with death tolls reported between 2,325 and 2,476 people and total infections exceeding 5,000. The World Health Organization has stated that the disease is spreading faster than the capacity to contain it. In response, the WHO reported that the country will receive 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine developed by MSD. However, some reports note that there is no effective vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain, a rare version of the virus that has spread fatally.

Health officials highlight several complicating factors. The African CDC has warned that the outbreak presents a very high risk to public health and shows signs of a pandemic emergency, noting a fatality rate above 46 percent. The CDC also suggests that only 30 to 40 percent of cases are being detected, meaning the actual number of infected people could be three times higher. Containment efforts are further hindered by war, population displacement, and attacks on treatment centers driven by misinformation.
