Manfred Weber, leader of the European People's Party, has called for the swift establishment of migrant return hubs in Africa. Writing in an op-ed for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Monday, Weber cited the recent surge of tens of thousands of unauthorized migrants into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta as a catalyst for this demand. He noted that close cooperation with Morocco allowed for the immediate return of individuals and prevented them from entering the Schengen area.
According to one report, the situation in Ceuta led several international leaders to criticize the migration policy of Spain's left wing government, which had previously granted legal status to half a million unauthorized migrants. Meanwhile, other reports highlight that the European Parliament recently voted on a return regulation that allows for the creation of return centers outside the EU, pending final approval from the Council of EU ministers.
