EU Migration Chief Calls for Reduced Dependence on Neighboring Countries for Border Control

European Commissioner for Interior and Migration Magnus Brunner stated that the European Union remains vulnerable to migration crises as long as the control of its external borders depends on the goodwill of neighboring countries. Speaking before the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, Brunner referenced a recent crisis in Ceuta as a test of the resilience and security of the EU's borders. He argued that the EU must reinforce its own capacity to prevent such episodes and urged the full application of the Migration and Asylum Pact.

Brunner advocated for strengthening the role of Frontex, improving early warning systems to detect coordinated movements and disinformation, and intensifying the fight against migrant smuggling networks. He also called for the acceleration of returns for individuals without the right to remain in European territory. While he acknowledged that cooperation with Morocco and the response from Spanish authorities helped contain the Ceuta situation and preserve the Schengen area, he emphasized the need for greater autonomy. A center left source framed the situation as a call for the EU to use all its influence to ensure cooperation from Morocco, while a center right source focused on the Commissioner's warning about the vulnerability caused by depending on neighboring states.
