President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders gathered in Kyiv on Monday to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. The events included a ceremony in front of Saint Sophia Cathedral, where Zelensky presented posthumous decorations to the families of fallen soldiers and a minute of silence was observed for those killed in combat. The gathering coincided with meetings of the Coalition of the Willing, also referred to as the Coalition of volunteers, which included the British Prime Minister, Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The coalition met to discuss defense issues and how to better protect Ukraine as Russian attacks against civilians intensify, including a recent drone strike on a shopping center that left 19 dead and 130 injured. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, making his first trip abroad, compared Ukraine's current resistance to the United Kingdom's fight against Nazi Germany and described Ukraine as the front line protecting Europe.
