Europe is experiencing a record breaking heatwave and prolonged drought that have triggered severe wildfires and energy shortages across the continent. In Romania, the army conducted controlled explosions to divert water to the country's main nuclear plant after the Danube River reached historically low levels. This water shortage forced the shutdown of one reactor and led Romania to declare a state of emergency. Similarly, Hungary's sole nuclear plant operated at only 10 percent capacity due to the heat and low water levels. In the United Kingdom, England and Wales recorded their driest July in at least 190 years, leading to water restrictions for approximately 23 million people.

Wildfires have devastated large areas of France, Spain, and Greece. In Greece, fires near Athens destroyed homes and vegetation, while a helicopter crash during firefighting efforts killed two personnel.
