Family Testifies to Mental Illness in Trial of Massachusetts Mother

The defense case has begun in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, a 36 year old former labor and delivery nurse accused of killing her three young children in January 2023. Clancy does not deny that she fatally strangled her children, who were aged 5, 3, and 8 months, in the basement of their family home. However, her attorney argues that she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and extreme mental illness at the time of the killings.

On Monday, Clancy's mother, Paula Musgrove, testified that her daughter was a loving parent who experienced a decline in mental health in the months leading up to the crimes. Musgrove described Clancy as feeling that her mind was being destroyed and that she was not herself. Another witness, Margaret Hamp, a nurse who worked with Clancy, testified that the defendant was a compassionate nurse and a caring mother.

Conversely, the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office argues that Clancy acted intentionally, rationally, and swiftly. Prosecutors have called more than 70 witnesses, including medical providers and Clancy's former husband, to argue that she was not experiencing psychosis during the murders. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and faces life in prison if convicted. If the jury finds she is not criminally responsible, she will likely be committed to a psychiatric hospital.
