A federal judge in the US District Court for the Northern District of California has ruled that the Trump administration illegally retaliated against the AI firm Anthropic. Judge Rita Lin vacated government directives that had designated the company a supply chain risk to national security and barred federal agencies and defense contractors from doing business with the firm. The ruling stated that these actions violated the First Amendment.
The conflict began when Anthropic refused to remove restrictions on the use of its AI technology for mass surveillance of Americans and lethal autonomous warfare. In response, the Trump administration and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered a permanent stop to the use of Anthropic products across federal agencies. The government argued in court that Anthropic was an unreliable vendor and could potentially modify models to obstruct military operations.
Judge Lin rejected these arguments, stating that the invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish government critics. The court found that the government provided a slim justification for its risk assessment and conceded that Anthropic's technology is no riskier to national security than other black box AI models. The judge ordered the administration to rescind the illegal directives.
