Federal Police Seek STF Ruling on Fate of Weapons Seized from Jair Bolsonaro

The Federal Police (PF) have requested that Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) decide the final destination of ten firearms, ammunition, and accessories seized from former President Jair Bolsonaro. The weapons are currently held by the PF Regional Superintendence in the Federal District. The seizure followed a July decision by Justice Moraes to revoke Bolsonaro's firearm permit and his Collector, Sport Shooter, and Hunter (CAC) certificate.

The arsenal includes various pistols, rifles, carbines, and shotguns. According to reports, seven weapons were collected from the Army Police Battalion in Brasília, and two had been in PF custody since 2023 following a Court of Accounts (TCU) decision. A tenth weapon, a customized shotgun, was seized from a third party in Rio Grande do Sul.

The PF argues that it lacks the authority to decide the fate of the items because the seizure resulted from a direct court order rather than a police investigation. While the Disarmament Statute typically directs the destruction or donation of weapons that are no longer relevant to a case, the PF's Internal Affairs department concluded that the final decision rests with the STF. The weapons will remain in PF custody until Justice Moraes determines if they should be destroyed, donated, or otherwise handled. One source notes that Bolsonaro is currently under humanitarian house arrest following a sentence of 27 years and 3 months.
