FIFA President Gianni Infantino Faces Resignation Calls Following Failed Private Investment Plan

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing intense pressure to resign following the collapse of a proposed private investment plan for a new commercial subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). The plan, which aimed to raise up to 4.2 billion dollars based on a 20 billion dollar valuation, would have seen private businesses manage events such as the World Cup and the Club World Cup. Infantino has since shelved the proposal after facing a wave of criticism and a threat of a boycott from UEFA, the governing body for European football. UEFA has stated it no longer has confidence in Infantino, while the Norwegian Football Federation has explicitly called for his immediate resignation.

Despite these challenges, Infantino maintains a base of support. He has received backing from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the football federations of Argentina and Mexico. Some reports suggest that over 200 of FIFA's 211 national associations had previously pledged support for his reelection. Infantino is currently the sole candidate for the presidential election scheduled for March in Rabat, with the deadline for new candidacies set for November 18. While some officials from CONCACAF and the AFC criticized the handling of the FFE plan, several nations within those confederations have remained loyal to the president.

Potential successors have been mentioned in the wake of the crisis. Lise Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Federation, has been cited as a possible choice, though she has denied that personal ambition drove her call for Infantino's resignation. Victor Montagliani, president of CONCACAF, has also been named as a potential challenger. Meanwhile, CONMEBOL has indicated it will not disrupt the current leadership as it pursues a 64 team World Cup for 2030.
