Saimoni Vunilagi, a 26 year old Fijian born forward for the second division Rugby League One team Kyuden Voltex, died on Friday after being hospitalized with symptoms of severe heatstroke. Vunilagi fell ill on Monday, August 3, 2026, following a team practice in Fukuoka. He was transported to a medical facility for treatment but passed away four days later. Vunilagi had previously played for Tokyo Sungoliath after attending Daito Bunka University and had joined Voltex last month.
Fukuoka and southwestern Japan have recently experienced extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius on the day Vunilagi fell ill. Local authorities had issued severe heatstroke warnings during this period. The club stated that players, staff, and associates are devastated by the sudden news and extended condolences to the family.
