Finance Minister to Introduce Taxation Bill Amid Opposition Protests in Parliament

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to introduce the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The legislation seeks to amend the Finance Act, 2026, the Income-tax Act, 2025, and the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007. As part of the proceedings, Sitharaman will also provide an explanatory statement regarding the Income-tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026.

Simultaneously, the Congress party has sought to disrupt the scheduled business. MP Manish Tewari submitted an adjournment motion notice to discuss the need for a new anti-defection law to prevent mass political defections driven by opportunism. Other Congress members, including Sukhdeo Bhagat and Pawan Khera, demanded the attendance and apology of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They cited police action against students at a Jantar Mantar protest and alleged theft of offerings at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya as urgent matters requiring his response.

Legislative activity continued despite these tensions. On Monday, the Lok Sabha passed a Bill to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges without discussion, while the Rajya Sabha passed the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended an NDA Parliamentary Party meeting known as Mangal Milan.
