The first presidential debate for the 2026 elections took place on Sunday, October 23, in São Paulo, but was characterized by the absence of the leading candidates. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL), and former Governor Romeu Zema (Novo) did not attend the event hosted by TV Band and Estadão. This resulted in the lowest attendance for an inaugural presidential debate since the redemocratization of Brazil in 1989. Only three candidates participated: Ronaldo Caiado (PSD), Renan Santos (Missão), and Augusto Cury (Avante).
