Flávio Bolsonaro Formalizes Presidential Bid with Alfredo Gaspar as Vice President

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party (PL) has formalized his candidacy for the presidency, selecting Federal Deputy Alfredo Gaspar as his running mate. The choice of Gaspar, a former prosecutor and former Secretary of Public Security for Alagoas, is intended to strengthen the ticket's focus on public security and the fight against organized crime. Gaspar also gained national prominence as the rapporteur of the CPMI do INSS, where he investigated billions in frauds and recommended the indictment of 216 people, including the son of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Fábio Luís Lula da Silva. The campaign intends to use Gaspar's record to highlight corruption within the current government.

Flávio Bolsonaro stated that the selection of Gaspar happened at the last minute after attempts to secure a female running mate from other parties failed. He noted that the leadership of the PP and Republicanos parties decided to remain neutral in the presidential race, which prevented alliances with candidates such as Tereza Cristina or Daniella Marques. While the PL president, Valdemar Costa Neto, claimed the choice had been planned for six months, Flávio Bolsonaro publicly corrected this, stating the idea came from campaign coordinator Rogério Marinho shortly before the announcement.

Recent polling from BTG/Nexus shows a tight race between the two main contenders. President Lula leads with 41 percent of intentions in the first round, followed by Flávio Bolsonaro at 37 percent. Other right wing candidates, including Ronaldo Caiado and Romeu Zema, trail significantly. While Caiado has criticized Flávio's lack of experience and claimed a second round between Lula and Flávio would favor the PT, the PL has instructed Flávio to avoid direct confrontations to preserve potential alliances for a second round.

Flávio Bolsonaro is currently managing several challenges. He has described himself as a target of psychological warfare following revelations that he sought funding from banker Daniel Vorcaro for a film about his father, Jair Bolsonaro. Additionally, the nomination of Gaspar has brought negative attention due to allegations made by government lawmakers. A political analyst from Dominium noted that the PL likely calculated this initial wear, though the nature of the accusations remains a sensitive point for the campaign.

Despite the lack of formal national alliances, Flávio announced support for senate candidates from eight other parties. This strategy aims to maintain ties with the center and right even as those parties remain officially neutral in the presidential contest.
