Flávio Bolsonaro Prioritized Security and Defense in Parliamentary Amendments

Senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro has concentrated his parliamentary amendments on national defense and public security, according to an analysis of Siga Brasil transparency data. Since 2020, Bolsonaro has indicated a total of 364 million reais in amendments. Of this amount, 21.8 percent (79.5 million reais) was allocated to national defense and 19.4 percent (70.9 million reais) to public security. These figures make him the senator who allocated the most to national defense and the second highest for public security, trailing only Marcos do Val.

In contrast, the senator provided minimal funding to other sectors. He allocated 50.8 percent (185.5 million reais) to health, which is only 0.8 percent above the legal minimum requirement. Other allocations included 3.1 percent for sports and leisure, 1.67 percent for social assistance, and 0.8 percent for education. Bolsonaro did not send any amendments to areas such as housing, transport, science and technology, culture, energy, or agriculture. This lack of funding for agriculture stands in contrast to his pro-agribusiness rhetoric, despite the fact that 78 out of 117 senators who indicated amendments since 2019 invested in that sector.

Of the total 364 million reais authorized, 245 million reais have been paid and 75 million reais are committed and awaiting payment. The senator stated that he prioritizes amendments for municipalities and regions in precarious situations that suffer from federal government inefficiency and poor management.
